Student Stories – Dr Hamel Patel on Learning Ayurveda and Preparing for Practice

Oct 15, 2026 | Ayurveda

A course in Ayurveda was something Dr Hamel Patel had been searching for over several years. Working as an NHS GP in the UK, he wanted to deepen his understanding of Ayurveda and work towards establishing his own Ayurvedic practice. He has since completed the Level 1 Diploma in Ayurvedic Lifestyle and Nutrition at the Ayurveda Institute UK and enrolled in Level 2 to continue his studies.

Choosing the Right Ayurvedic Programme

Ayurveda was something Dr Patel had been familiar with through his Indian background, and its spiritual teachings had long resonated with him. As an NHS GP, he wanted to deepen his understanding of holistic medicine and explore how he could build on this knowledge to establish his own Ayurvedic practice.

“For many years I’ve been looking for a course that I could study for myself in order to set up my own Ayurvedic practice… After a call with Dr. Deepika I knew straight away from her energy and enthusiasm that this was the course for me…”

After searching for a suitable course for several years, he was looking for a programme that would follow authentic Ayurvedic principles.  A conversation with Dr Deepika helped him make his decision. He recalls being drawn to her energy and enthusiasm, which gave him confidence that he had found the right course.

Making a Vast Subject Easier to Understand

“What I’ve loved is the way that they were able to package just such a vast subject into logical and digestible chunks so that it’s easy to follow and implement.”

Ayurveda covers a range of concepts, and Dr. Patel valued how the Institute presented the material in a way that made it easier to follow and apply. He describes how the course breaks down a vast subject in a way that is easy to understand and apply. This approach was important to Dr. Patel as he developed his understanding of Ayurveda, as he could follow the curriculum and work through the lessons at a comfortable pace, which he states was one of the aspects he appreciated the most.

Bringing Ayurvedic Principles into Daily Life

Dr. Patel has already begun applying what he learned during the Level 1 Diploma and shares that he has made changes in his own life and passed on his learning to friends and family. These early experiences have given him opportunities to use his knowledge outside his studies as he continues to develop his understanding of the subject.

“..As a result of what I’ve learned so far, I’ve already been able to make some changes within my own life and that of my friends and family and it’s shown some improvements in our health and well-being already.

Continuing Towards Ayurvedic Practitioner Training

Having completed the Level 1 Diploma in Ayurvedic Lifestyle and Nutrition, Dr. Patel has already enrolled in Level 2 to continue developing his knowledge, to establish his own Ayurvedic practice. His decision to progress reflects the aim he had when he first began looking for a course, which was to deepen his understanding of Ayurveda and build on that knowledge for his future work. At the Ayurveda Institute, students can begin with the Level 1 diploma and continue their learning through further practitioner training. This pathway allows learners to develop their knowledge over time as they work towards their personal and professional goals. For Dr. Patel, continuing to Level 2 is the next step in pursuing an ambition he had been considering for years.

Advice for Future Ayurveda Students

“My one piece of advice would be to follow the curriculum and try and keep up with the learning in small consistent bite-sized bits of reading or watching the videos and everything will just flow from there.”

Hema alsol shares some advice for those beginning their studies, stating that they should make time for the course consistently and work through the material as they progress while also s keeping up with the curriculum through manageable periods of reading and watching the lessons.
